Keywords:Japan Sea, tsunami, Sea level variability

Tsunamis invoked by the Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred on January 1, 2024 have been analyzed using tide gauges installed by South Korea, Russia, and Japan along the Japan Sea coasts. High tidal fluctuations as high as those near the epicenter were observed on the east coast of South Korea. Tidal fluctuations associated with the tsunami along the Japanese coasts showed different temporal patterns among coasts east and west of the epicenter. The mechanism of this east-west difference in tidal oscillations will be investigated from hydrodynamic aspects by conducting numerical experiments with simplified bathymetric and coastline features.
