[O08-P13] Observation of volcanic gases with a simple alkaline filter paper method at Sakurajima Volcano
Keywords:alkaline filter paper method, volcanic gases
Sakurajima Volcano is currently in a phase of low eruption but high emission of volcanic gases. Therefore, in order to understand and predict volcanic activities by volcanic gases, we established a simple collection and analysis method for volcanic gases (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen fluoride) and measured them. In addition, the concentration variations and compositions of these volcanic gases were measured.
The concentration and composition ratio variations of these volcanic gases were compared with the number of eruptions and the amount of volcanic ash. As a result, the Cl-/SO2 ratio of the volcanic gases showed a good correlation with the number of eruptions. A model for the behavior of volcanic gases was also developed by comparing the amount of volcanic ash and the number of eruptions.
