Emotions function to control others; anger elicits submission and sadness elicits assistance. However, the politeness social norm forces smiling while inhibiting the expression of anger and sadness in public, resulting in smiles having multiple meanings. In this study, we present experimental results of human recognition of dominant and affinitive smiles, which have the same function as anger and sadness in an inter-agent bullying task, and discuss the co-evolution of politeness social norms and pragmatic smiles. Participants in the experiment (n=45) were assigned 6 (perpetrator expressions: anger, sadness, rewarding smile, friendly smile, dominant smile, no expression) × 6 (victim expressions: anger, sadness, rewarding smile, friendly smile, dominant smile, no expression) × 2 (roles: large agent is perpetrator - small agent is victim, and The small agent was the aggressor and the large agent was the victim), and the relative dominance-subordination relationship between the two agents was estimated by observing their interactions. The experimental results showed that anger and dominant smile infer dominance. This suggests that social norms and contexts of emotional expression play an important role in their social functions, and contributes to a better understanding of the various meanings and functions of smiles under politeness social norms.
