Photomultiplier tubes (PMT) make use of this external photoelectric effect and are superior in response speed and sensitivity (low-light-level detection). Using microchannel plates (MCP) as an electron multiplier, The PMT have evolved into more versatile devices capable of wide-bandwidth measurements down to the picosecond level as well as low-light-level detection at the photon counting level.
The light detection efficiency (D.E.) of the PMT is referred to in the product of the collection efficiency (C.E.) and the quantum efficiency (Q.E.) of the PhotoCathode(PC). Conventional MCP-PMT reduces C.E. by an Al film on MCP and a mesh electrode for gate operation.
The positive ion which occurred in a vacuum tube as one of the causes of the photomultiplier tube short life is known to give damage to a PC. Particularly, the GaAsP PC is easy to come under this influence.
The development GaAsP-MCP-PMT without an Al film on MCP and a mesh electrode for gate operation improved the ion-resistant processing in the PMT of short life. As a result, they were found to have the D.E. of 3.3 times and the long life.
