[II-39] Intercomparison of rainfall measured by ground gauges, radars and satelites

Keywords:Rainfall data accurancy, Satellite rainfall, Radar rainfall

The accuracy of rainfall observed by radars (XRAIN) and satellites (GSMaP) was investigated using the ground observation data of AMeDAS. In the analysis, all rain events occuring between 2015 – 2018 were sampled and classified into four rain types: "typhoon", "frontal", "local and heavy" and "stratiform". Over all the types, the accuracy of GSMaP rainfall was lower than XRAIN. Particularly, the underestimation of GSMaP hourly rainfall was found for local and heavy rain. XRAIN was also slightly underestimated for typhoons, possibly due to the attenuation of electromagnetic waves in heavy rain. Since those rainfall data are widely used for various purposes, increasing their accuracy is needed.
