As catalyst supports in the nuclear waste containers in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, geopolymer is required to show high porosity, and durability. In the present work, synthesis of potassium and metakaolin based geopolymer and dehydration of geopolymer was carried out. During the water content measurements in the samples, it was noticed that, in the demolded samples, the water content quickly decreased to less than 30% within 7 days, while, in the open cap samples, more than 50% of water remained after 28 days. From the pore size and the distributions for the samples, although the samples were post-cured at different temperature up to 28 days, the average pore size and the pore size distribution were almost the same. This work implies that the pores formed steadily within four days. It is inferred that pores have been formed at a certain viscosity and a single chemical reaction has been the origin of pore formation.
