[2C02] Ion irradiation-induced changes in the properties of rock-forming minerals of concrete aggregates at high fluences

Radiation-induced volume expansion (RIVE) in rock-forming minerals of concrete aggregates is a primary cause of long-term degradation of concrete structure, due to crystal to amorphous transformation. However, the changes in their properties were not clearly understood, especially at high fluence. For this reason, crystal quartz and two feldspars (albite and microcline) were irradiated with 3MeV Si2+ irradiation, following step height measurement and nano-indentation to quantify the change in volume and mechanical properties. The results indicated fluence dependence of RIVE was similar in quartz and feldspars, but the mechanism of expansion was different depending on alkali ions. The hardness seemed a function of amorphization, while Young’s modulus almost correlated with RIVE. Alkali ions included in minerals could affect both amorphization kinetics and final amorphous structure.
