To improve toughness and ductility of tungsten, unidirectional Hi-Nicolon type S SiC fiber is selected to strengthen tungsten due to its coefficient of thermal expansion close to W, high high-temperature strength and stability to neutron irradiation. To verify this thought, different composites were prepared by hot press with or without W foils at different temperature (1500 °C, 1600°C, 1700 °C and 1900 °C). The tensile tests results showed that composites with W foil sintered at 1500 °C, 1600°C and 1700 °C have obvious pseudo-ductile behavior, and the strength is much higher than specimen without foils. But for 1900 °C sintered sample, the strength for composites with or without foils are almost the same. Details about tensile properties and microstructure will be reported.
