[1L11] Chemical compatibility of liquid tin (Sn)
(1)Corrosion characteristics of steels
Keywords:Liquid divertor, Material compatibility, Al bearing steel, electron irradiation
Liquid tin (Sn) is a promising coolant for liquid divertor concepts. However, its material compatibility with structural materials is an important issue. The purpose of the present study is to investigate corrosion resistance of RAFM steel, austenitic steel, and Al bearing steels in liquid Sn. The corrosion tests were performed at various conditions such as a static condition and in-situ electron beam irradiation condition. The results indicated that the corrosion of the RAFM steel was caused by an alloying reaction between the steel compositions and liquid Sn. The alloying corrosion was mitigated on the Al bearing steels, since the Al2O3 layer formed on their surface functioned as a corrosion barrier. It was also found that the alloying corrosion was promoted under an electron irradiation.
