Efficient waste management for decommissioning Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant requires analysis streamlining. Thus, this research aimed to separate and detect europium(III) in a microfluidic device coupled to a thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) detection system. Extraction performance of two phases, ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl] imide ([C4min][NTf2]) and dodecane, containing 0.1 M N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) extractant were performed. The dodecane system achieved 98% extraction in 3 M HNO3 within 5 s, where the IL system achieved 96% extraction in 0.001 M HNO3 in 15 s. This duality makes it possible to use the same system configuration for a range of analytical samples. Furthermore, successful sub-micromolar, 0.1 µM for Eu(III), detection using the TLS provides an alternative analytical in-field screening device.
