[2H16] Improvement of efficiency of capacitor type gamma-ray battery using lead and aluminum plates

A capacitor type gamma-ray battery developed in this study consisted of stacking several cells where two plates (0.3 mm thick) made of lead and aluminum sandwiches an acrylic plate (0.5 mm thick) for insulation in 1 cell. During gamma-ray irradiation with a 60Co source, generated charges in the gamma-ray battery were stored in a film condenser connected parallel to the battery. When the battery (3 cells, parallel connection) was irradiated for 2-144 h, charges of 2-10 μC were stored in the film condenser.

Using PHITS code, it was found that 120 cells would be needed to shield the gamma-rays and reduce their energy by a factor of two orders of magnitude. We will show results of gamma-ray irradiation to the battery with up to 50 cells and discuss effects of geometric arrangement of the plates and their connection on resultant charge storage in the film condenser.
