Our previous studies showed that the concentration ratio (CR) of Cs-137 had a tendency of increase with age (2012, 2015, 2017) and depth (0-20 cm) in young cedar forests and red pine and Quercus mixed forests in
Yamakiya, Fukushima Prefecture. It suggests that the amount of Cs-137 absorbed by plant roots may increase over time, so this result is important for understanding the dynamics of Cs-137 in forests.
In July 2020, we measured Cs-137 concentrations in soil and plant roots at the same cedar forest site by depth to clarify the current CR trend.
Cs-137 concentrations in plant roots at different depths ranged from 5 to 2453 Bq/Kg, and CRs ranged from 0.049 to 0.690, which tended to be higher in deeper layers. On the other hand, the CR of plant roots in the young cedar forest in 2020 was lower than that in 2017,so there is no tendency to increase with time.
