Metallic fuels have a higher heavy metal density than oxide fuels and contain more U-238 as the fertile material. Therefore, the core can achieve a high conversion ratio, which leads to an improvement in core life and capacity factor. In the present study, a conceptual design of an irradiation reactor with high capacity factor and high neutron flux was carried out by using metallic fuels under the same thermal power condition as that of the Joyo Mk-IV. The fuel cost of this core was also evaluated.
