[1N10] Quantification of a Substance with Nuclear Cross-section Property of Strong Neutron Multiple Scattering Using Wavelength-resolved Neutron Imaging
Keywords:Wavelength-resolved neutron imaging, Neutron transmission spectrum, Quantification of water, Multiple scattering, Particle transport calculation
Non-destructive quantification of water content in substances has been performed using neutron imaging. A method without neutron energy analysis requires experiment-dependent calibration curve between neutron transmission and water content. In contrast, wavelength-resolved neutron imaging is expected to quantify water content without the curve by the profile analysis of a neutron transmission spectrum. However, hydrogen is strong incoherent scatterer for neutrons, and their multiple scattering changes the spectrum. Here, the multiple scattering also depends on the water content. Therefore, it is considered that the water content can be uniquely determined from the spectrum profile. In this study, we found a relationship between the spectrum profile and the water content by the PHITS code and developed a method quantifying the water content.
