[1E09] Vitrification of Combustible Low and Intermediate Level Wastes using Cold Crucible Induction Melter (CCIM)

Keywords:Low and intermediate level wastes, Cold crucible induction melter, Vitrification

The dried active waste (DAW), one of the waste that can be vitrified with CCIM, consists of cotton, paper, polyethylene envelope, and rubbers. Another waste is the spent resin, which is vitrified by mixing with DAW. The volume reduction of DAW was more than 1/50 based on not compressed waste after LILW vitrification. Therefore, the final disposal cost of radioactive waste can be significantly reduce after the vitrification.
The vitrification facility is designed to ensure safety not only in normal operation but also in accident situations. To this end, safety of the facility was ensured through design against risks such as fire, earthquake, loss of cooling water and accident analysis was performed in accordance with related codes.
