The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident has shown the necessity of countermeasure for Beyond Design Basis Events (BDBE). Our study focuses on the passive cooling of a next generation fast reactor in the case of BDBE. At the loss of power accident, decay heat should be removed even though the fission reaction has stopped.. The goal of this study is to understand if passive cooling alone can extract enough heat from the core and thus prevent its meltdown. A FEM model has been used to do a parametric study of the heat transfer from the reactor to external air. This study shows that passive cooling through radiation and natural convection is effective to extract decay heat.
