[2I20] Improvement of neutron production target system for increasing intensity on electron accelerator-driven short-pulse neutron source
Keywords:Electron linear accelerator, Pulsed neutron source, Neutron production target, Particle transport simulation calculation, Target-moderator in-line arrangement
At the pulsed neutron source facility based on an electron linac at Hokkaido University, HUNS, high wavelength-resolution time-of-flight neutron imaging experiments are performed using a decoupled thermal neutron moderator. However, the neutron intensity is lower than that of a coupled moderator. For the higher intensity, we tried to increase the neutron supply from the neutron production target by developing a target-moderator in-line arrangement, inwhich the target and moderator were placed in series on the neutron beamline. We evaluated the new arrangement with particle transport simulations. After improving the coupling between the target and moderator, the neutron intensity became 1.34 times higher than before while keeping the narrow neutron pulse and photon flux by the self-shielding effect of the larger target.
