[1A05] Reduction of MHD pressure drop by electrical insulating α-Al2O3 layer on FeCrAl-ODS alloys in liquid breeder blankets of fusion reactors

MHD pressure drop is one of the critical issues in liquid lithium lead (LiPb) blankets of fusion reactors. FeCrAl alloys, the candidate structural materials for the liquid LiPb blanket, form an α-Al2O3 layer by oxidation treatment at a temperature over 1273 K. The α-Al2O3 layer is effective in the reduction of the MHD pressure drop. This study investigated the electrical insulating performance of the α-Al2O3 layer formed on oxide dispersion-strengthened FeCrAl (FeCrAl-ODS) alloys. The performance was more stable than that of commercial FeCrAl alloy Kanthal@APMT. The reduction of MHD pressure drop can be prompted in an electrically insulated rectangular duct when the aspect ratio of the duct geometry is appropriately adjusted.
