[2E09] Isotope separation by using crown ether
Keywords:Isotope Separation, Enrichment, Crown-ether, Liquid-Liquid Extraction, Multi-stage iteration
Ca-48 is a double beta nuclide with a high decay energy of 4.27 MeV. The measurement of double beta decay of Ca-48 was used to study the neutrinoless double beta decay to demonstrate the mysterious of neutrinos. In addition, Li-7 is used as a pH controller in the coolant of pressurized water nuclear reactors. However, Li-6 could capture a thermal neutron from a nuclear fission reaction, resulting in tritium production inside the coolant. Then, a high concentration of Li-7 is necessary. This is the main reason to study the isotope separation and enrichment of Ca-48 and Li-7. In this study, isotope separation of Ca-48 and Li-7 was examined via multi-stage liquid-liquid extraction using crown ether because it has high isotope separation coefficients and has the potential to be a promising method.
