SiC and SiC/SiC composites are attractive in fission and fusion reactor materials because of their excellent properties in many aspects. Irradiation may change the mechanical properties of SiC and ion irradiation can induce surface residual stress that may also affect the testing of mechanical properties. However, different irradiation conditions may lead to different mechanical properties variation and induce different residual stress. Thus, it is important to evaluate these differences in order to better understand the effects of irradiation on the mechanical properties of SiC.
Therefore, chemical vapor deposition SiC (CVD-SiC) and liquid-phase sintering SiC (LPS-SiC) specimens were fabricated and then irradiated at different temperatures and doses. Mechanical properties and surface residual stress were evaluated by several characterization methods.
