The internationally accepted disposal option for high-level radioactive waste is deep geological disposal. This study focuses on a pre-Neogene sedimentary rock, which categorically constitutes a large part of Japanese deep geological formations yet is not studied in detail with respect to its sorption and diffusion properties. The macroscopic morphology and microstructure of the rock cores were characterized. The adsorption of cesium on the rock was studied.
