A large amount of soil contaminated with radioactive materials is stored in Fukushima Prefecture. Radioactive Cs is adsorbed on silicate minerals that occupy most of the surface area. These minerals are classified as 1:1 type clay and 2:1 type clay, the latter of which has been difficult to desorb. Under these circumstances, a method to separate 2:1 type clay was proposed by Nishijima et al. Against this background, we focused on the possibility of soil fracturing using CO2 laser light as a method to remove Cs from 2:1 type clays and started our research.
