[3B16] Effect of Rainwater on Radioactive Cesium Deposited in the Municipal Solid Waste Final Disposal Site

The concentration of radioactive cesium 137 in leachate in several municipal solid waste final disposal sites in Fukushima Prefecture was investigated. Most of the final disposal sites had the concentration of radioactive cesium 137 of a few Bq/L, but some disposal sites had values exceeding 10 Bq/L. Most of the leachate is water that the rainwater permeates inside the disposal site and flows outward. Therefore, the effect of the amount and seepage behavior of the rainwater on the outflow of the radioactive cesium 137 deposited in the disposal site were numerically investigate. Although cesium is easily soluble in water, this study considered that radioactive cesium 137 is attached to small particles in wastes. This study clarified the qualitative behavior of radioactive cesium 137 that is accompanied and transported by rainwater permeating through the disposal site.
