An adsorption facility using activated carbon is used as a countermeasure for radioactive noble gases, which are generated during a severe accident. Since these noble gases have a shorter half-life, they will be released after they are hold in adsorption facility for 48 hours. However, activated carbon has a small adsorption capacity and a short retention time, a large amount of activated carbon had to be used. We have developed a xenon adsorbent that is 80 times retention than activated carbon under dry air. In this presentation, the basic performance of this adsorbent under various conditions will be reported. A safer air purification system by combining this adsorbent with other adsorbents for radioactive materials will also be proposed.
