[4] Characteristics of Visitors by Motivations for Visiting a City Center Based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

For Okayama City residents, the survey subjects, this study based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs clarified characteristics of visitors in terms of motivation for visiting the city center. Results of analyses revealed the following points.1) Results confirmed ‘non-spiritual needs’ and ‘spiritual/material needs’ as motivations for visiting a city center.2) Each type of need, in addition to age and gender, affects the choice of transportation mode used. Specifically, visitors with ‘spiritual/material needs’ tend to choose public transportation. Visitors with ‘non-spiritual needs’ use non-public transportation.3) Among the motivations for visiting related with spiritual needs, a tendency to use public transportation system is low in ‘belongingness and love needs’, but is strong in ‘esteem needs’ and ‘self-fulfillment needs’.
