[48] Study about urban population decline in Asian developing countries
Case study of Thailand

This study aims to identify the situation of urban shrinkage, that is population decline in cities in Thailand. From the analysis of population data, in these 20 years, provinces and cities in Bangkok Metropolis, excluding Bangkok, Eastern Seaboard industrial area and resort area in Southern region has gained population. On the other hand, provinces and cities in Northern and central region have lost its population. Now more than half cities, especially small and medium size cities, has lost its population. From case study of three depopulation cities, we found that local governments face problems of dependence on foreign labors and succession of techniques to Thai people, and decrease of revenue.
