[51] Transporting power to “satellite smart towns”
– Electric vehicle augmentation and replacement of electric grid transmission –
Keywords:smart town, electric vehicle, distributed power sources, transport power
Recently, smart towns have been studied for their use of distributed power sources, but most must confront the difficulty of power shortages in towns served by grid power. For this study, to realize a "satellite-type smart town" that can cover the shortage of power from distributed power sources that are distant from the city, we examined reduction of transport power costs from distributed power sources to a town using electric vehicles instead of relying upon utility grid resources. Result indicate the following. 1) The possibility is high for replacement in a town that is about 8 km distant from distributed power sources and which has fewer than 100 households. 2) Technology innovation such as the use of direct current power can increase the possibility considerably. 3) Low-cost electric vehicles are more likely to be feasible than vehicles with high energy storage capacity.
