[57] A Study on the Effects of Spatial Elements on Traveling Speed of Left-Turning Vehicle
Keywords:vehicle traveling speed, left-turning vehicle, street entrance, intersection, curve radius
The number of traffic fatalities in our country remains high. Particularly at the environment around intersections, farther traffic safety measures are required to create an environment where people can drive under safe speed in unconscious level. Depending on these situations, the radius of the intersection curve is being reduced especially for left-turning vehicles. In this study, 316 vehicles were measured at 15 location in Okayama city, and it revealed the relationship between the travelling speed of left-turning vehicles and the spatial elements at streets and intersection. As a result, the travelling speed of vehicles is regulated by the spatial elements, and it can be controlled by improving those elements. Furthermore, the effect of reducing the radius of intersection curve was quantified.
