“Agariya” is a storage building and evacuation shelter traditionally built on the hillside for shops or inn owners to protect their possessions and commercial goods from the flood. It also functioned as family member to evacuate in case of flood. This study explains the regional distribution along the Kumano River basin. Also, based on detailed study in Hongu-cho, it identified the types and architectural characteristics of buildings, and its usage changes of Agariya over time. The study confirms that there are storage type and storage-residential type of Agariya. The reasons of the decrease of Agalia are due to less flood damage since 1952, the implementation of flood control measures, increase of two-story houses, and preparation of public shelters. In modern society, it is essential to pass on the wisdom of traditional flood control measures that remain in the area.
