Following the implementation of the Act for the Promotion of Bicycle Use in Japan in 2016, the creation of cycling routes has been promoted under the leadership of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Consequently, high-quality cycling routes offering high levels of satisfaction to a more diverse range of users will need to be realized. Therefore, with the aim of gaining insights into planning future cycling routes, this study conducted a questionnaire survey involving the users of the main route of the Shimanami Kaido, a cycling route that is well known in Japan, regarding their satisfaction with the route. The results quantitatively reveal that the traffic volume and the quality of scenery have a particularly significant influence on the satisfaction with the route overall, whereas paving and undulations have a considerably strong influence on the satisfaction with the route locally.
