[E5-04] Accessibility of Third Places around a University Campus: A Spatial Analysis on Travel Times and Usage Patterns
Keywords:Spatial Dynamics, Campus Design, Public Spaces
This research aims to study the spatial dynamics of “third places” within the University of Tsukuba campus area in Japan and their potential as spaces for social engagement among young individuals. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), this study analyzes the distribution and accessibility between “first places” (residential areas), “second places” (university buildings), and “third places” (social gathering spots) around the campus vicinity. By employing spatial analysis techniques, the research aims to reveal patterns of spatial relationships, travel times, and accessibility between these different place types. The findings will provide insights into the spatial dynamics of third place utilization and contribute to understanding the role of these spaces in fostering social interactions, community building, and overall well-being. The research outcomes will have implications for the development of age-inclusive environments that support social connectivity across generations.
