[P1-11] Investigating Multi-decade Ecological Vulnerability of Punjab Province (Pakistan) Using Earth Observation Big Data
Keywords:ecological vulnerability, remote sensing, earth observation, geographical information system
The remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) is applied to evaluate the ecological vulnerability of the Punjab province, Pakistan. The analysis is planned for 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. RSEI is composed of four indicators: greenness, dryness, wetness, and heat. The dataset from Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 are used to derive these indicators and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to combine the indicators. Data for the same months is used for each year to avoid the effect of seasonality. Prior to the construction of the RSEI, cloud cover is removed using cloud masking algorithms, and four indicators are normalized to unify their dimensions. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is used for large-scale computation. Currently, the research is in progress. The results are expected to provide valuable insights into the spatial and temporal occurrence of ecological vulnerability in the Punjab province.
