To assess the different meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological aspects of droughts, a variety of drought indicators are available. These drought indexes do not, however, take into account an accurate evaluation of the harm caused by the drought. In order to comprehend the differences between North Korea and South Korea's agricultural infrastructure systems, we investigated the application of satellite-based drought indicators over both countries. We examined drought indices based on in situ measurements and satellite data over the Korean Peninsula. Drought indices were calculated using data from 2001 to 2018 from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). The indices' correlations for assessing environmental and agricultural rice droughts revealed opposite correlation patterns. In well-irrigated areas like South Korea, the vegetation condition index (VCI) and evaporative stress index (ESI) are the best tools for assessing agricultural drought.
