Several studies suggested the application of laser ablation (LA) for the removal of carious lesions. In this study, we attempt to observe the effect of laser ablation to the sliver diamine fluoride (SDF) stained dentine for future development of selective removal of carious lesions by combine use of LA and SDF staining. For the experiments, sections of teeth with the thickness of about 1.0 mm were prepared. The sections were stained with SDF solution and irradiated by a Linear accelerator-based free-electron laser (FEL) with a wavelength of 2800 nm. When irradiating the FEL with average power of 3.99 mJ/macro-pulse, pits were clearly formed on each of SDF stained and not stained dentine. Average depths of the pits on the SDF stained dentin and on not stained dentine were 0.033mm and 0.031mm, respectively, suggesting that there is no remarkable difference of the irradiation effect between with and without SDF staining. On the other hand, when irradiating the FEL with average power of 1.24 mJ/macro-pulse, average depths of the pits on the SDF stained dentin and on not stained dentine were 0.015mm and 0.006mm, respectively. These results suggested the possibility of selected removal of dental tissue stained with SDF solution by optimization of the laser irradiation conditions.
