1. Background.

The UN Future's Summit was held on 22-23 September 2024, against the backdrop of a stark assessment that only 17% of the SDG targets are on track to be achieved globally by 2030. As such, the Summit of the Future - building on the SDG Summit in 2023 - called on all governments to consider ways to strengthen the foundations for more effective global cooperation.

An important feature of this lagging progress has been the increasing instrumentalisation and securitisation of development cooperation amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in Asia. And this trend has accelerated, as epitomised by Japan's 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific' (FOIP) since 2016 and South Korea's 'Free, Peaceful and Prosperous Indo-Pacific' since 2022.

2. Main points to be discussed
This session will consist of four paper presentations. These will explore critical concepts and issues/topics that would contribute to the ongoing debates on how to turbo-charge the SDGs process, and what comes next.

Two speakers from JASID will present papers. First, Soyeun Kim will discuss development cooperation from a macro perspective, critically examining the rhetoric of 'solidarity' in the Global South. Kanako Omi will then revisit the debate on endogenous development and symbiosis in the post-SDG era.

Two delegates from KAIDEC will present their research on SDG progress and the post-SDG debate in and about South Korea.

3. Expected outcome of the session
This session will provide an opportunity for scholars from JASID and KAIDEC to share and discuss recent debates and views on the session theme in/from their respective associations.
