[2I203] Operationalization of Human Security’s New Strategy and Social and Solidarity Economy: Exploring “solidarity” as the third strategy
Keywords:Social and Solidarity Economy, Human Security
The 2022 UNDP Special Report “New threats to human security in the Anthropocene: Demanding greater solidarity” added “solidarity” as the third strategy for human security, after protection and empowerment. However, the report does not fully explain “how to operationalise its call for solidarity” (Gasper & Gomez, 2023, p.270). This session aims to kick-start this discussion by engaging with the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) experience. The session presents two SSE practices: (1) smallholders supported by the international NGO Solidaridad and (2) Islamic microfinance institutions in Pakistan. The cases review how “solidarity” influences “protection” and “empowerment” and ask whether the virtuous cycle of three strategies is created or not. The session encourages the audience to join the discussion to explore how new human security strategies will achieve a society where everyone’s dignity, survival, and livelihood are secured.
