Due to the March 11 2011 M9 earthquake, stress field in Japanese arc has been changed dramatically. It is proposed that long-term volcanic activity will increase due to the stress field change. In this session, we aim to clarify activation process of volcanic activity triggered by the stress field change. The 17th century volcanic activity in 3 volcanoes in south west Hokkaido is studied as a possible example of volcanic activity triggered by mega-earthquake. Monitoring of ongoing processes in volcanoes in Tohoku area and their interpretation is the key to predict future volcanic activity. We expect interdisciplinary research presentations from a wide range such as, volcanology, seismology, geodesy, geology, petrology and subduction zone dynamics.
