[M-IS06] Conservation of geoparks, natural geosites and cultural heritage: weathering process and damage assessment

Thu. May 30, 2019 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM Poster Hall (International Exhibition Hall8, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Chiaki T. Oguchi(Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University), Tetsuya Waragai(Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Nihon University), Kuniyasu Mokudai(Tohoku Gakuin University), Magdalini Theodoridou(School of Engineering, Cardiff University)

Geoparks, world heritage sites, natural geosites and cultural heritage structures are considered important natural and/or cultural heritage properties. They have been exposed to weathering not only in geologic time frame but also in human time scale, thus rocks and geological materials are often facing deterioration. In order to preserve these sites conservation measures should be considered. Several studies have taken place on this topic involving a wide range of research fields, such as geomorphology, engineering geology, geoarchaeology, conservation science, geoconservation, materials science, petrophysics, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering etc. However, our knowledge on many aspects is still limited. The session welcomes contributions, presenting original research, discussions as well as case studies on documentation, measurement and monitoring techniques, experimental procedures, predictive models, damage assessment, etc. Papers from all research fields are invited dealing with the broad topic of geosites and cultural heritage.
