NIPR is developing an open image archive platform with metadata that recorded the history of Antarctic / Arctic observation. This platform is now experimentally openned as NIPR Image Archive Web service as a following link.

https://image.nipr.ac.jp

Images to release on this platform are recorded pictures and videos in the Antarctic / Arctic. These images are data that recorded Japanese public activity in polar regions. In order to efficiently utilize data and distribute metadata, we are considering cooperation with various external Web services. For this reason, we are dealing with IIIF, Web API, JSON-LD, and we are testing the distribution on the Web. In the future we plan to respond to image retrieval and distribution enhancement on social media and various cloud services through image search engines. In this study, we will introduce the effect on data distribution expected to promote publication of image data by research institutions, and expectation to strengthen cooperation with social media and search engines.
