[MIS08-03] The Opening of ‘NIED Quake map!’ and result of questionnaire survey about interest of local seismicity
Keywords:NIED Quake map!, display of local seismicity
The Seismological Society of Japan (SSJ) established the committee to support the activity of Geopark in order to notify people of the current condition of seismology with the same perspective of people. Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. There are many both natural and cultural heritages of earthquakes in Geoparks. However, there is also a lack of introduction to recognize the local seismicity.
National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) opened the web site named as 'NIED Quake map!' to visualize the local seismicity at a geosite in July 2018. It is easy to observe current seismicity detected by Monitoring of Waves in Land and Seafloor (MOWLAS) and historical earthquakes. This shows the seismicity in central Japan around the Itoigawa Global UNESCO Geopark through the QR code on the guide plate at the Fossa Magna Park.
2. 'NIED Quake map!'
This page first shows the local seismicity in one year. The color and size show the depth and magnitude of the earthquake, respectively. The latest earthquake is shown with the star. There are volcanoes, active faults, and rivers to grasp the place. People can recognize the seismicity within the ground with seeing both the memorized large earthquakes and no feeling microearthquakes.
3. Results of views
We confirm about 20-30 accesses from the outside. In the case of the field trip by the group at Fossa Magna Park, there were 50-60 accesses.
4. Cooperation with geopark
NIED concluded the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement with Japan Geopark Network (JGN) on the use of the data and research results at the Geoparks on October 13, 2018. NIED also concluded the memorandum regarding the use of the 'NIED Quale map!' NIED plan to open web sites according to request from the Geoparks through JGN.
5. Questionnaire survey about interest of local seismicity and expansion of 'NIED Quake map!'
The committee of the SSJ gave seminars of seismology for Geoparks. We explained the use of the historical earthquakes in 2018 and conducted the questionnaire survey for regions composing the Japan Geopark Network, which consists of the UNESCO Geoparks, the Japan Geoparks, and associate members for proceeding to be Japan Geoparks. We obtained the answer from 26 Geoparks and seven associate members. We note as Geopark both Geopark and the associate members.
There are geosites of historical earthquake in 46 % of Geoparks. About 91 % of Geopark have interest in the local seismicity, however, there are some display of local seismicity in only 27 Geoparks. About 82 % Geoparks have an interest to introduction of local seismicity, however, it depends on the cost. Geoparks only share the cost for display of local seismicity since NIED construct and manage the web site of the 'NIED Quake map!' NIED plans to construct and supply the web sites in accordance with the request from the Geoparks
