[MZZ51-P02] Rethinking 'Stenonian Revolution' in stratigraphy: From Prodromus (1669) to 'Anthropocene'
Keywords:Nicolaus Steno, stratigraphy , scientific revolution
When the Danish anatomist Nicolaus Steno (1638-1686) published his Prodromus de solido in 1669, it is said that the history of geology saw a revolution in stratigraphy, i.e. 'Stenonian Revolution.' My research on this topic, however, revealed that the revolution implied not only the discovery of the principles of stratigraphy but also the emergence of the concept of 'history of nature' (Spinoza suggested) and 'geo-power' (embodied in Leibniz's practice). The significance of the revolution will be discussed.
