[MZZ51-P03] How Edmund Naumann made the Geologic Map of Japan in 1885?
Keywords:Naumann, geologic map, Gümbel, the International Exhibition
German Edmund Naumann (1854-1927) came to Japan in 1875. He became the first professor of geology in the University of Tokyo, founded the Geological Survey of Japan, and made good geological reconnaissance maps of Japan. In 1885, he returned to Germany and introduced these maps at the third International Geological Congress (IGC) held in Berlin, at which they were greatly admired. The map compares favorably with any present existing geologic map. How Naumann made the good Geologic Map of Japan in 1885? Because he was not a briliant student in university days, and when he came to Japan he worked at no duty museum. And the other reason is that he knew the preliminary paper on geology in Japan writen by Guembel (1874). Guembel got stones of Japan from the International Exhibition held in Vienna in 1873.
