Three names of women are recognized on the membership lists of the Meteorological Society of Japan (1882-) in the nineteenth century. At the time when the national meteorological services were under developing at the initiative of the central government, all of them are in the private sector. By following their origins and backgrounds, some role of the private sector in the formation process of the meteorological observation network in the Meiji era are described.
