◆Report on the Future Vision Workshop
The sediment core storage facility at our center has three functions: a core repository for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), a core repository for seafloor cores acquired by JAMSTEC vessels, and an academic core repository for marine, lake, and terrestrial cores collected by various other vessels and projects. The IODP core repository occupies three of the five core storage reefers, and it is expected to be used for about 90% of the total number of storage units in FY2023 when the current IODP will be terminated.
A workshop was held online on Friday, October 9, 2020, to share information on the future prospects of the core repository, including its expansion, the latest trends related to the IODP, and research strategies beyond 2024, as well as to discuss new developments in drilling science research, education, and outreach activities centered on the core repository. The workshop was attended by a total of 120 researchers and students from research and educational institutions in Japan, and a lively exchange of opinions took place.
