[HCG26-P01] ASSESSMENT OF WIND/SOLAR ENERGY POTENTIAL AS A POWER GENERATION SOURCES AT SOME SELECTED LOCATIONS IN PAKISTAN
Keywords:Energy potential, probability distribution function, techno-economic, renewable energy, electricity cost
The main objective of this research was to investigate the wind power potential and the feasibility of developing a solar PV plant at seven selected locations in Pakistan. In this study, wind speeds were collected over a period of 2005-16 and measured at 10m height. Ten dissemination functions were connected to analyze the wind speed characteristics of these chosen areas and assess the wind power density. In additions, the technical viability study of the proposed crystalline technology-based PV plants with different tracking systems in terms of Fixed, 1-axis, Inclined-axis, and Two-axis were analyzed using Photovoltaic Geographical Information Systems (PVGIS) and PV Watts’s software. The results showed that Kati Bandar has the highest annual wind speed of 4.04 m/s in comparison to other locations, while the lowest value of 1.33m/s was obtained in Islamabad Capital Territory. The maximum power density of 258.75W/m2 is occurred in July at Kati Bandar, while the lowest minimum wind power density of 1.68 W/m2 occurred in September at Islamabad at 10m height. Moreover, the simulation results showed that Two-axis performance is higher than as compared to another track system. Performance results, the performances of four small-scale wind turbines were evaluated. Based on the results, the Pitch wind/30kW Grid wind turbine had the highest annual capacity factor of 56.366%, whereas, WS-12/8kW wind turbine had the minimum at 15.416%. Consequently, the Minimum and the Maximum annual electricity cost in the studied locations are 0.005$/kWh and 0.032 $/kWh using Pitch wind/30kW Grid and WS-12/8kW, respectively. Moreover, the Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for PV Plants was estimated. It is found that, LCOE for fixed tilt, 1-axis, Inclined axis and 2-axis tracking modes PV plants for all locations were obtained in the range of 0.178 - 0.239 $/kWh, 0.14 – 0.202 $/kWh, 0.145 – 0.203 $/kWh and, 0.133 – 0.191 $/kWh.
