Keywords:serious environments, terrestrial cyanobacteria, germination of akinetes, Nostoc sp. HK-01

We previously reported that dried cells of the terrestrial cyanobacterium, Nostoc sp. HK-01, have a high tolerance to several cosmic environmental conditions. The dried cells of the species were used as materials in space exposure experiments. After exposure to harsh environments, there is a possibility that some cells may have suffered severe damage even if it is not evident in their appearance. Detailed observations of individual cells and their related chemical analyses are required by examining cells after exposure to harsh environments. In this study, we focused on the cell germination and continuous proliferation of Nostoc sp. HK-01 to confirm the damage.
