[HGG01-P03] Charcoal making project for recycling waste bamboo from oyster farming in the Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture
Keywords:oyster farming, waste bamboo, charcoal making, local resource, Matsushima Bay
The shelves for oyster farming in the Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture are made of many Moso bamboos (Phyllostachys edulis). Those bamboos, as being soaked in sea water, become degraded within about three years and be replaced by new ones. As the result, the used bamboos change into waste. It is estimated that about 40 to 50 thousands waste bamboos per year appear from oyster farming in the whole Matsushima Bay. Authors have been attempted to reutilize these waste bamboos as resources thorough original charcoal making method during the past few years. As some fishermen, local government officers and people are becoming to pay much attention this project, it is expected that this project would positively affect local society closely related to fisheries.
