[HSC05-05] Evaluation of Caprock Sealing Performance in Saline Aquifer Storage
Keywords:Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage, Reservoir Simulation, Seal Performance Evaluations
The analysis model was created with reference to the storage site of the CCS project in operation. At the storage site, there are two types of seal layers as caprocks, and their physical property values are as follows.
Seal-A: Absolute permeability 1.0×10-16m2, Porosity 0.04
Seal-B: Absolute permeability 1.0×10-21m2, Porosity 0.01
In this research, two cases were carried out. As the caprock, the Seal-A was applied in Case-1 and the Seal-B was applied in Case-2. In the analyses, CO2 was injected into the reservoir to predict the pressure response inside the caprock and the spread of the CO2 plume in the reservoir. TOUGH-2/ECO2N was used in the numerical analyses.
As the result, slight CO2 penetration into the caprock in the Case-1 (Seal-A), and no penetration in the Case-2 (Seal-B) were predicted.
It is considered that a more appropriate storage design will be possible by evaluating not only the storage performance of the reservoir but also the sealing performance of the caprock.
