Visualization of the subjective evaluation of regional environment began in human geography as a study of mental maps in the 1960s. Studies on the mental map in terms of residential desirability have conducted at a variety of scales of regions around the world. However, since few studies have examined the change in space preference, the stability of space preference is unknown. In addition, maps representing space preference cannot capture the connection between regions in detail. To resolve these issues, this study aims is to examine variability of space preference by employing the method of network analysis. Data used in this research are derived from an attitude survey on the character of the people by prefecture conducted by Nippon Hoso Kyokai in 1978 and 1996. An analysis of the answers to questions on residential desirability of prefectures other than the present residence. A comparison of the residential preference on the map produced with GIS between 1978 and 1996 revealed that there are stable and variable components of residential desirability. Close examination with the network analysis method clarifies some local trends hidden in the map representing space preferences.
