[HTT19-07] Relationship between the Image of the Town and the Seams of Asphalt Pavement Works

In general, civil engineering work, based on various underlying plans in the city is carried out as a different project. Therefore, the attractiveness of the completed cityscape may be totally canceled even if a part of areas or individual buildings are good.

Attractive urban development has been considered for buildings and structures on the ground. For example, the undergrounding of buildings and electric wires with a sense of unity, and the maintenance of green spaces such as rows of trees. However, much attention has not been paid to the road surface of the road asphalt that has been peeled off and buried when each construction.

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the condition of this asphalt and the image of the city.

In this study, we focus on the traces of general asphalt pavement work. We will explore the image that people have without noticing, focusing on the state of seams where the difference in texture of asphalt pavement is conspicuous, the size of construction marks, and the difference in color. In addition, by conducting psychological experiments on the consistency between the frontage of surrounding buildings and the size of the pavement, we extract the images which we have without knowing it daily.

In this study, we conducted three experiments to grasp the state of the seams of asphalt pavement, which makes us feel uncomfortable, to extract the sense of harmony due to the slight difference in color of the road surface, and to see the relationship between the building and the pavement traces.

By the experiment using the samples arranging two asphalt pavements with different textures in close contact with each other, we extracted a range that does not feel strange. As a result of conducting experiments on 180 subjects for 7 samples, it was found that the difference in aggregate particle size was within 25%, and that no discomfort was felt when the particle size was fine.

Next, for color combinations, an experiment using 30 colors extracted from actual pavement was conducted on 180 subjects. As a result, it was clarified that although no clear result was obtained, it felt natural in cases other than the contrasting colors.

Finally, a psychological experiment was conducted by the Paired Comparison Method on the relationship between the frontage of the building and the size of the asphalt pavement trace. Based on the results of the experiments so far, we compared the psychological amount of the consistency between the size and the frontage using the preferred pavement. As a result, it became clear that the size of the construction site and the consistency with the frontage affect the impression of a good cityscape.
